Building a Balanced Identity: Lessons from The Puttyverse

This week I was the guest on the MultiPod: the podcast run by the creative team at The Puttyverse. For the uninitiated, The Puttyverse is a community of multipotentialites. This is a term coined by Emilie Wapnick for those of us without “One True Calling.”

When I initially joined the community I was invited to make an introductory post. That reflection surfaced a memory from my grade 8 graduation when I was awarded ‘General Proficiency.’ My best friend was thrilled to have won the French award. One of the most intelligent guys in my class won the Mathematics award. I was stumped as to what my award was for. After the ceremony I asked my science teacher which class I earned this award in. He gently explained that it was for them all. He said, “it is the highest honour we can give.” Even at 14 I wondered whether he was pulling my leg.

Fast forward to 2022 and I’m more convinced than ever that I do not have one true calling. I’ve worked in academia, nonprofits, and a large multinational corporation. For a long time I thought this was a bad thing – that I hadn’t found my thing. I was a jack of all trades, master of none.

Luckily, I was told by members of the Puttyverse community that the original line from Shakespeare is actually one that compliments those with varied backgrounds:

A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.

I have come to believe that my unique combination of experiences enhances my value. My distinct skill set makes me a more valuable member. I’ve learned that you can get so good they can’t ignore you at more than one thing. Moreover, I’ve learned that you don’t have to be ‘good’ at everything you try.

During my conversation with Ted we talk about intentionally building a more balanced identity beyond your current full-time title. An identity that incorporates more than your career. One that is forged when the way you spend your time aligns with your personal values. I hope you enjoy the conversation!
